Julie KITCHEN lost against Miriam NAKAMOTO
Julie KITCHEN talks to us about her loss against Miriam NAKAMOTO last Saturday in Pala (USA), for the WCK Champion of Champions World Title.
Julie KITCHEN: "My 3 weeks in America were fantastic. We worked extremely hard to promote the fight and help with tickets, etc.
I had an amazing build up to the fight and felt in incredible shape both physically and mentally with 12 weeks training, but for some reasons tired very fast in the ring which unsettled me a bit.
I enjoyed the first part of the fight and had some great exchanges with Miriam who hit hard as promised but I remained unphased and nothing wobbled me. I was successful in off balancing her with teeps and felt comfortable in the clinch but in the later rounds and despite Miriam being cut badly I lost my rhythm and did not capitalize on any combinations in rounds 4 and 5 which was disappointing..
We were told at the rules meeting that downward elbows were not allowed and I feel I could have forced the cut open very easily whilst in the clinch instead of trying to force the head back for a hooking elbow if they were allowed.
Then Miriam caught me with 3 flying downward elbows with no referee warning and the judges still scored it despite protests from our corner. This is not the fault of the fighter at all but it would be advisable for referees and officials to attend rules meetings as the downward elbow can kill someone, especially if you think you dont need to defend it.
However, I still feel that Miriam would have won the fight by split decision even if she had a point deducted.
This was down to her keeping a clear head despite being badly cut and her combination accuracy so I am not unhappy about the decision plus she was more focused and driven on the night so well done to her.
The people that are saying I got beat up are just goading for a reaction. The fact is I am uninjured so very happy to spend the last week of my daughters school holidays with them.
The most positive thing to come out of this bout is that a female event outsold a male event on the same night in the same district and our fight was praised highly.
Miriam has kindly offered a rematch so I hope to come back to the USA and redeem the loss very soon which is exciting."
